Becta refers Microsoft to the Office of Fair Trading October 28, 2007

Becta, the government’s education technology agency, has today made a complaint to the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) for alleged anti-competitive practices by Microsoft in the schools software marketplace and in relation to Microsoft’s approach to document interoperability……… In the interim, Becta’s advice to schools considering moving to Microsoft’s School Agreement subscription licensing model is that they should not do so. Schools must be legally licensed for all the software they are using, and if licensing Microsoft products is an imperative they should consider using a perpetual agreement such as ‘Select’ until such time as the OFT have responded to our complaint.

A summary of Becta’s position can be found here – http://news.becta.org.uk/display.cfm?resID=34425&page=1658&catID=1633

floppy_disk 1

Whilst photographing some work in a school last week, I found myself answering questions of some curious Y4 children - why was I taking the photo’s, what would I be doing with them etc. Curiosity was satisfied when I explained that I wanted to show other teachers what their school was doing with Scratch (see below). But when I switched off the camera and pulled out the floppy disc (I’d been using a Sony Mavica) the children were amazed – what’s that, what does it do, how does it work. I hadn’t realised that we had moved on quite so fast!

Highlighted on the bbc yesterday, this free download has caused so much interest that it brought the website down and I can understand why. It’s computer programming / control made easy and appealling, this YouTube video shows why: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxDw-t3XWd0

I love the idea of this site, as well as its’ usefulness. Collaborators are invited to submit photos for every O.S. grid square in the UK. The archive is then searchable by name or postcode.

A relatively recent addition is the ability to view the images via Google Earth
