The first phase is over and though it was tough mentally (for both participants and trainers) there are some really exciting ideas coming to the fore. I just hope that, with everything else on schools’ agendas, the ideas discussed this week get the opportunity to bear fruit.

Excuse me while I pour the second glass……

Writing instructions November 19, 2007

I was sent this link by one of our teachers, thanks Kelly!

When I was in the classroom I would try to find time for a bit of origami - because I enjoy it and because it is a skill which requires the children to listen carefully to instructions.

These days I suppose that I would feel obliged to link it to the NC (though it didn’t stop me in the past!!). Imagine asking half the class to watch the video then write instructions to make the bird, then asking the other half to try to follow the instructions ….

Thanks to Simon for flagging up the fact that the bbc are putting embedding codes on their Science Clips and Bitesize resources. Wonder whether they can be embedded into our Learning Platform???

It will be interesting to see what the project schools do with the software! I’m pleased that the teachers attending the course shared my  excitement - I just wish I could answer the question “Why is this better than just using a tape recorder?”

Becta refers Microsoft to the Office of Fair Trading October 28, 2007

Becta, the government’s education technology agency, has today made a complaint to the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) for alleged anti-competitive practices by Microsoft in the schools software marketplace and in relation to Microsoft’s approach to document interoperability……… In the interim, Becta’s advice to schools considering moving to Microsoft’s School Agreement subscription licensing model is that they should not do so. Schools must be legally licensed for all the software they are using, and if licensing Microsoft products is an imperative they should consider using a perpetual agreement such as ‘Select’ until such time as the OFT have responded to our complaint.

A summary of Becta’s position can be found here - http://news.becta.org.uk/display.cfm?resID=34425&page=1658&catID=1633

… but I should have read the instructions properly. Unlike Anthony and Doug I’ve used the tools in Textease Studio, you’ll have to wiggle the mouse around a bit to get the idea. Click on the picture to open the textease file.
